Grocery Stores
Grocery stores, markets and supermarkets are located around the city, and vary in size.  Esselunga is a chain of large supermarkets where you can find a very large variety of food, as well as household goods and toiletries.  La Standa is a smaller supermarket, but also has a good range of food and household goods.  The Conad and Centro stores are perfect for day to day food requirements and also some home wares, and there are many located throughout the city.

Markets
The central market in San Lorenzo is an excellent place to buy fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, meat and fish.  The market at Sant’ Ambrogio is also a good place to buy fresh food at reasonable prices.  Both are closed on Sundays.
The Mercato delle Cascine is open only on Tuesday mornings, and it has a wide range of goods, from food to clothes to house wares.

Post Offices
The easiest post office to use is the one on Via Pellicceria, 3, by Piazza della Republica – this has a help desk for students, and is where you can go to organize your permesso.  It is open from Monday to Saturday.  Stamps can also be bought from most tabacchi’s around the city, and when posting letters/postcards outside the city of Florence then post in the ‘all other destinations’ slot.

Hospital
In case of emergencies the best place to attend is Azienda Sanitaria Di Firenze, located in Piazza di Santa Maria Nuova.  For non emergencies, you can find an extensive list of English speaking doctors in Florence in the English Yellow Pages:

Carabinieri
The Carabinieri are conveniently located on Borgo Ognissanti 48, just a few meters from the Florence Institute, which makes the street especially safe.  Should you run into any difficulties – loss of passports, wallets etc, then you must go to the Carabinieri station to report it.  Their telephone number is 055 27661.
For emergencies please dial 113, and for fire dial 115.

Gyms and swimming pools
There are a number of gyms located around the city, with prices varying from expensive to cheap, depending on facilities.  There are also public open air swimming pools in the city that are open in the summer.

Wash and Dry
There are a large number of ‘Wash and Dry’  and ‘Onda Blu’ launderettes around the city, making it convenient if your apartment does not have a washing machine. 

Book stores
Edison’s is probably the largest book store in the city centre, and has some books in English.  As well as all the normal books that you would expect to find in a large book store, it also has an impressive collection of design books as well as magazines and local information books.
McRae’s, Feltrinelli, BM and Paperback exchange all offer a selection of books in English.

Consulates
A large number of countries have consulates located in Florence, which can be helpful should problems arise with documentation, passports etc.

Cartoleria Lory Printing and Art Supply
Lory has two parts – a store that specializes in supplies for art and design, and a copy and printing section.  It has one of the best selections in the city. Lory is found at Via S. Spirito, 4/R.

Cinemas
There are a number of cinemas located around the city.  The Odeon cinema in Piazza Strozzi shows movies in English on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.  The following link details the upcoming schedule:

Ikea
Ikea is located near to the airport. A free shuttle bus runs from Piazza della Stazione to Ikea and back every day at regular intervals.  Please see timetable below:

The Mall is an out of town ‘outlet’ where some of the biggest fashion brands have stores selling their products at discounted prices.

Bus Terminal SITA and LAZZI
The SITA and LAZZI bus stations are close to the main train station of Santa Maria Novella.  Both companies run buses to destinations throughout Tuscany and Italy.

Computer Repair
If you have problems with your computer, you can contact etiher of these:
SOS Computer Service: www.soscomputerservice.it . Both Asistance at Home or at theiroffice at Via Pisana 63/A
Tuscany PC Clinic:
http://www.tuscanypcclinic.com.  They charge a call out fee and a fee per hour, with discount (usually 20% for students).

Museum Card
Via Ricasoli 60, Amici del Museo Degli Stumenti Musicali. Sudents of Graphic and Interior Design will need this card to enter the museums of Florence during field trips. The Musem Card costs 20 Euro for a 6month duration and will need to be renewed each semester.
