The 4 week Summer Furniture Design course introduces students to the complete furniture design process, from initial research and concept development through material selection, technical resolution and reduced-scale prototyping. Combining practical design skills with theoretical study, the course explores materials, construction techniques, detailing and production, together with the history and development of Italian and international furniture design. Students develop an individual furniture project while gaining an understanding of how an initial design idea can be developed toward a resolved and producible object.
DESCRIPTION
Taught entirely in English, the Summer Furniture Design course combines studio-based project work with an introduction to furniture history, materials and production. Students investigate the relationship between form, function, ergonomics, materials and construction, developing their ideas through research, sketching, drawing, modeling and prototype development.
The program is suitable for students of furniture design, interior design, industrial or product design, as well as participants with a broader interest in Italian furniture and design. No previous furniture design experience is required.
What You will Study
During the four-week course, students are introduced to the principal stages of furniture design and development. Topics include design research and concept development, ergonomics and proportion, materials and finishes, furniture construction and detailing, technical drawing, model making and prototyping. Historical and contemporary examples of Italian and international furniture design provide additional context for the development of each student's individual project.
FURNITURE FACTORY VISITS
The course typically includes two visits to furniture manufacturers, giving students the opportunity to see how furniture moves from design development into production. These visits complement the studio project by providing direct exposure to materials, manufacturing processes, construction methods and the relationship between design decisions and industrial production. Italy has played an important role in the development of modern and contemporary furniture design, bringing together design, craftsmanship, materials and industrial production. Studying furniture design in Florence gives students the opportunity to consider this tradition within its broader Italian cultural and design context, while developing their own contemporary design response.
summer course dates & schedule
The short course is held for 4 weeks each summer during the month of June only. See the academic calendar for the exact dates. Studio classes take place Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 15:00–18:00. Tuesdays are reserved for scheduled activities such as furniture factory visits, special lectures and other course-related visits. An optional introductory Italian language class is also offered for three hours per week, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 13:00–14:00.

Short summer courses of graphic design are an intensive introduction to the design process. The studio design course is an introduction to graphic design theory and its application. The course rapidly moves through the fundamental design principles, the planning process and finally the guidelines used in order to create innovative two-dimensional art-work and visual graphics.

It is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to not only complete their assignments that include illustrating graphic elements, but also to inspire creative potential in this expressive design field

The Florence Institute offers architecture courses that teach drawing and observational skills plus an introduction to architectural theory and Italian history. This short summer course is designed for students with an interests in the art and architecture of Italy. Our diploma level is ideal for students new to the field of Interior Design. For entry-level student, there are three options, one-year or two-year courses. The program rapidly moves from the fundamental design principles of form, space and order to the realization of detailed architectural drawings, renderings and material studies. Year 3 is for BA students with thesis and professional practice.
