The four-week Summer Graphic Design course is an intensive introduction to the fundamental principles and processes of graphic design. Students develop practical and conceptual skills through studio exercises that explore composition, color, typography, image, layout and visual communication, progressing from initial research and ideas through design development to resolved two-dimensional outcomes. The course is designed for students beginning their studies in graphic design, as well as students from related areas such as marketing, advertising and visual communication who wish to strengthen their understanding of visual design. No previous graphic design experience is required.
DESCRIPTION
The course is taught entirely in English and combines design theory, visual research and practical studio work. Students are introduced to the principles that underpin effective graphic communication and learn how elements such as typography, imagery, color, composition and hierarchy can be brought together to communicate an idea.
Projects develop through a design process of research, concept development, experimentation, refinement and presentation. Examples of Italian and international graphic design provide additional visual and cultural context, encouraging students to consider different approaches to contemporary visual communication.
Who is this course for?
No previous graphic design experience is required. The course is particularly suitable for:
- students considering future study in graphic design;
- students in marketing, advertising or communications seeking stronger visual design skills;
- students from other creative disciplines interested in graphic communication; and
- participants who want an intensive introduction to graphic design while studying in Florence
What You Will Study
During the four-week course, students are introduced to the essential elements of graphic design and visual communication. Topics include composition and visual hierarchy, color, typography, image and layout, design research, concept development and presentation. Studio exercises allow students to apply these principles to individual design outcomes while developing greater confidence in communicating ideas visually.

The course meets 3 hrs per day - Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00-13:00. There is also a course of Italian Language for 1 hr-per day - Monday, Wed, Thursday 13:00-14:00. See here the Summer Application Form:

We also combine the Graphic Design courses with Italian language for 3hrs per week – a chance to build confidence and understanding of one of the most beautiful languages in the world. A development of knowledge of the language can help you to enjoy the culture and customs of Florence and Italy even more.

The Graphic Design students in year 1 develop an understanding of color and composition, design, typography, and drawing.The studio design course is an introduction to graphic design theory and its application. It is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to not only complete their assignments that include illustrating graphic elements, but also to inspire creative potential in this expressive design field
